The Pelindo subsidiary resumes ship-to-ship services in Nipa waters, seeking to expand maritime business, improve operational readiness and strengthen Indonesia’s role in international shipping
PT Pelindo Jasa Maritim (PJM), a subsidiary of state-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo), has resumed ship-to-ship (STS) operations in the Nipa Transhipment Anchorage Area (NTAA) in Batam, as part of efforts to expand its maritime business and strengthen Indonesia’s position in international shipping routes.
The operations resumed on October 9, 2026, and were among the key developments highlighted at a media gathering held by PJM with journalists in Batam, Riau Islands, on Monday.
The Nipa area is located near the Strait of Malacca, one of the world’s busiest international shipping lanes. Its strategic position provides Indonesia with opportunities to develop maritime services and increase the use of its territorial waters for international shipping activities.
STS services involve transferring cargo between vessels in designated maritime areas. The operations support ships navigating international routes and form part of the broader maritime logistics and service chain.
PJM said it had prepared the facilities, infrastructure and qualified marine pilots needed to support operations in Nipa. The company has also strengthened coordination with relevant stakeholders, including shipping agents, to support service readiness.
The resumption of STS activities is part of Pelindo’s efforts, through PJM, to develop maritime business opportunities in border areas, improve the competitiveness of national maritime services and maintain Indonesia’s presence in its maritime frontiers.
During the gathering, PJM also outlined its broader business portfolio, which includes vessel pilotage and towage, crewing, shipping-channel dredging, vessel docking and repair, port equipment maintenance, utilities and port waste management.
The company operates across several regions in Indonesia, supported by a fleet of vessels, marine pilots, crew members and maritime professionals. Its services are intended to support navigational safety, port operations and the movement of goods through national logistics networks.

PJM President Director Arief Hermawan said the media played an important role in informing the public about the maritime and port industries and their contribution to national logistics.
“We organized this evening’s media gathering with one primary objective: to build closer, more transparent and sustainable communication between Pelindo Jasa Maritim and our media partners in Batam,” Arief said.
He described the media as a strategic partner in delivering accurate and useful information to the public.
Arief said PJM intended to maintain communication with journalists beyond the gathering and remain open to dialogue about the company’s developments and broader maritime industry issues.
The company said its business strategy also focused on improving service quality, strengthening operational safety and reliability, optimizing assets, developing employee competencies and pursuing customer-oriented growth.
These initiatives form part of Pelindo’s transformation within the Danantara ecosystem, which aims to improve efficiency, strengthen competitiveness and generate sustainable economic value, PJM said.
Arief said continued engagement with the media could help improve public understanding of Indonesia’s maritime potential and the sector’s contribution to national development and sovereignty.
