Pelindo Jasa Maritim Reviews Safety Readiness at Samarinda Stations

The review examined infrastructure, supporting facilities and personnel readiness, while reinforcing risk-based safety practices designed to strengthen operational reliability across Pelindo Jasa Maritim’s Samarinda pilotage operations

PT Pelindo Jasa Maritim’s Director of Operations and Engineering conducted a management walkthrough of operational facilities and pilot stations in and around Samarinda on Aug. 18 to assess infrastructure readiness, supporting facilities and personnel preparedness.

The visit was also aimed at strengthening the company’s safety culture by focusing on the identification and control of operational risks before they develop into incidents.

The first visit was to the Muara Pegah Pilot Station, where the director inspected the radio station, floating jetty and pilotage personnel on duty.

The inspection was intended to provide management with a direct assessment of field conditions, including the functionality of operational support facilities and the readiness of personnel to provide pilotage services.

The visit also included discussions with field personnel about operational conditions, requirements and challenges encountered in their daily work.

The walkthrough continued the following day at the Mahulu Pilot Station.

“This activity is part of our effort to ensure that available facilities and resources are truly capable of supporting pilotage operations,” said Warsilan, Pelindo Jasa Maritim’s Director of Operations and Engineering.

“Field conditions are a crucial factor in decision-making, particularly given the highly dynamic nature of pilotage operations in Samarinda, which demand constant readiness from both personnel and facilities,” he said.

A key focus of the visit was Stop Work Authority, or SWA, which gives workers and contractors the right and responsibility to stop work when they identify unsafe conditions or behaviors.

The company said SWA reinforces the principle that safety is a shared responsibility involving management, supervisors, safety personnel, workers and contractors.

Under the approach, work can be temporarily suspended when risks are identified, allowing conditions and risk controls to be reassessed before operations resume.

The initiative is consistent with Danantara’s strategic direction to shift safety management from an emphasis on accident prevention toward systematic risk control, the company said.

That approach focuses on managing operating conditions, risks, critical controls, decisions and lessons learned rather than focusing solely on responsibility after an incident occurs.

Pelindo Jasa Maritim said it would also seek to ensure that issues involving pilot station facilities, communication equipment, personal protective equipment and other supporting infrastructure are resolved and verified rather than simply recorded.

“Through field visits in Samarinda, dialogue with personnel, and the strengthening of SWA and risk control implementation, PT Pelindo Jasa Maritim remains committed to building safe, reliable, and sustainable operations by prioritizing safety in every decision,” Warsilan said.

“We arrive together; we return home together,” he added.
