PT Terminal Teluk Lamong (TTL), a port terminal operator in Indonesia, has launched a barbershop programme aimed at creating jobs and developing vocational skills among residents living near its operations.
The programme, called “Lamong Cukur”, is part of the company’s social and environmental responsibility (TJSL) initiative. It provides haircutting training and employment opportunities for residents in the surrounding area, while offering grooming services to terminal users and truck drivers.
The initiative is designed to help participants secure employment or establish their own businesses, supporting efforts to strengthen economic independence in the local community.
Training was held from Aug. 10 to Aug. 12, followed by internships at professional barbershops throughout September. Participants received instruction in haircutting techniques and professional service standards, as well as practical experience in customer service and workplace discipline.
Following the training and internships, participants from communities near the terminal were recruited as barbers for the programme, the company said.
David Pandapotan Sirait, president director of PT Terminal Teluk Lamong, said community empowerment programmes should deliver lasting economic benefits rather than focus solely on training.
“The most important thing is ensuring that the skills provided open up opportunities for the community to be productive, find employment, or engage in independent entrepreneurship. We want our Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programs to go beyond mere training and truly create economic opportunities,” David said.
The barbershop also provides a service for terminal users and truck drivers, who can get haircuts while waiting for terminal operations or taking breaks.
David said the company would continue to assess the needs and potential of communities around its operations, adding that the programme could be expanded to other locations if it performed well and demand was sufficient.
Zul Chaidir, head of Asemrowo district, welcomed the initiative, citing its potential to support job creation, skills development and community empowerment.
He said cooperation between the company, local government and the community should continue.
TTL said it would continue developing social responsibility programmes intended to address community needs and create social and economic benefits in areas surrounding its operations.
