House Commission V examines safety, security and service standards at Makassar Port, seeking improvements in infrastructure, operations and coordination among regulators, operators and agencies to improve port reliability
A parliamentary commission inspected safety, security and service standards at Makassar Port in South Sulawesi on Friday as part of its oversight of transportation infrastructure and public services.
The visit by Commission V of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR RI) focused on the readiness of port facilities, compliance with safety and security standards, and measures to improve service quality.
The delegation was led by Commission V Deputy Chairman Andi Iwan Darmawan Aras and member Hamka B. Kady. They met Pelindo Director of Risk Management Boy Robyanto, Pelindo Regional 4 Executive Director Abdul Azis and other Pelindo Group executives responsible for operations in Makassar.
The meeting was also attended by Muhammad Anto Julianto, director of ports at the Directorate General of Sea Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, along with representatives of relevant government agencies and state-owned enterprises.
Aras said the visit was part of the commission’s oversight function in infrastructure and transportation, sectors that directly affect the public.
“Safety and security are non-negotiable,” Aras said. He added that port services should continue to improve so operations can run safely, orderly and efficiently.
The commission sought information on the readiness of infrastructure and facilities, the implementation of safety and security procedures, and measures being taken to improve services at the port, he said.
Aras said the findings and input from the visit would be used for further evaluation by relevant stakeholders.
“We want to ensure that the available facilities function properly and deliver optimal benefits to the public. Collaboration among regulators, port operators, and all relevant agencies is crucial,” he said.
Anto said the Ministry of Transportation was continuing to push for higher safety, security and service standards at ports nationwide.
He said improvements should cover facility readiness, employee competence, operational procedures and coordination among stakeholders.
“Ports play a strategic role as transportation and logistics hubs. Therefore, all operational aspects must meet applicable standards and effectively address the needs of service users and the public,” Anto said.
The ministry would continue to provide guidance and oversight on port services to support reliable operations and improve inter-regional connectivity, he said.
Boy said Pelindo was committed to operating Makassar Port with a focus on safety, security, reliability and service quality.
The company regularly evaluates operational risks and takes measures including improving facility readiness, strengthening work procedures, upgrading employee capabilities and coordinating with regulators and other agencies, he said.
“We welcome the specific working visit by Commission V of the House of Representatives as an opportunity to present service updates and gather input for improving the management of Makassar Port,” Boy said.
He said Pelindo was also working to maintain consistent and reliable services to support passenger movements and the flow of goods and trade.
Boy added that risk management was an integral part of maintaining business continuity and that feedback from lawmakers, regulators, service users and other stakeholders would be incorporated into service evaluations.
After the meeting, the delegation inspected the Makassar Port Passenger Terminal, where it reviewed infrastructure and facilities used by passengers.
The field inspection focused on the implementation of safety, security and service measures at the terminal, one of the main passenger facilities at Makassar Port.
