Port Authority Checks Nilam’s New E-RTG Readiness

Tanjung Perak port authority inspected a new electric gantry crane at Nilam Container Terminal, checking safety, certification and operational readiness ahead of its October launch

The Tanjung Perak Main Port Authority inspected a new electric rubber-tyred gantry crane (E-RTG) at Nilam Container Terminal as the facility prepares to put the equipment into operation in October.

The new E-RTG is part of an equipment-modernisation programme aimed at increasing cargo-handling capacity and improving operational efficiency while supporting the use of lower-emission technology.

Nilam Container Terminal handled 368,127 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) through August 2026, supported by four container cranes, eight rubber-tyred gantry cranes and one reach stacker.

The port authority, known as KSOP Utama Tanjung Perak, conducted the inspection on Sept. 16 to assess the equipment’s readiness before it enters service.

Sugeng Adi Prasetyo, a general functional officer in the port affairs section of the Tanjung Perak Main Port Authority, said the inspection covered safety, certification, electrical systems and operational readiness.

“All components and safety aspects must be verified before the equipment begins operation, including equipment certification and the readiness of electrical and other supporting systems,” Sugeng said.

He also said the terminal should have mitigation and response procedures in place to address potential technical problems and maintain operational continuity.

Retno Pujianto, head of Nilam Container Terminal, welcomed the inspection and the authority’s recommendations.

“The addition of E-RTG units is part of our effort to enhance operational reliability while promoting the use of more modern and eco-friendly equipment,” Retno said.

She said the terminal had prioritised safety, certification, equipment reliability, electrical systems and mitigation measures before putting the equipment into service.

The new E-RTG is expected to increase yard-handling capacity and improve productivity and service quality, while supporting the terminal’s efforts to modernise its operations.

Nilam Container Terminal, the Tanjung Perak Main Port Authority and other port stakeholders will continue to coordinate on the equipment’s operation, with the aim of improving container flows and supporting efficiency in Indonesia’s logistics chain.
