IUMI nominates Sean M. Dalton as sole presidential candidate, with election scheduled during September’s Annual Conference in Rotterdam, the Netherlands this year
The International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) has nominated Sean M. Dalton as its next president, with the election scheduled for Sept. 23 during the association’s Annual Conference in Rotterdam.
Dalton is the sole nominee for the position and, if elected by the IUMI Council, will succeed Frédéric Denèfle, who is completing a four-year term as president.
Dalton currently serves as IUMI vice president. He previously chaired the association’s Cargo Committee and served on its Policy Forum. Outside IUMI, he is chair of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters (AIMU), a former chair of the National Cargo Bureau (NCB), and a member of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
“It is a tremendous honour to be nominated to serve as president of this 152-year-old association,” Dalton said in a statement. He thanked Denèfle for his leadership over the past four years, saying it had strengthened IUMI’s position as the global voice of the marine insurance industry.
Dalton said the sector faces growing challenges from geopolitical uncertainty, rapid technological change and the transition to a more sustainable economy.
“Marine insurance has always evolved to meet new challenges,” he said. “IUMI has a vital role in providing leadership, advocacy, education and a collaborative platform that enables marine insurers to continue supporting and facilitating global trade.”
If elected, Dalton said his priorities would include attracting and retaining talent, promoting diversity and inclusion, expanding education and professional development, and helping members adopt artificial intelligence. He also pledged to keep sustainability at the centre of IUMI’s agenda, including continued attention to seafarer welfare and ocean conservation.
Based in New York, Dalton is Executive Vice President and Head of Marine Underwriting for North America at Munich Reinsurance America Inc.
He graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and holds a master’s degree from the State University of New York Maritime College. Dalton also served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1988 to 1999.
He holds Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate in Marine Insurance Management (AMIM) designations. A professional mariner, Dalton previously held a U.S. Coast Guard Third Mate Unlimited Tonnage License and currently holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master 100 Ton License. He is also a certified Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) Divemaster.
