PJM Strengthens Operational Readiness and Safety at Banten, Panjang Ports

PT Pelindo Jasa Maritim (PJM) is strengthening operational readiness, safety and service quality through direct field inspections at Banten and Panjang ports, with management reviewing operational activities, facilities and safety standards.

PJM’s Director of Operations and Engineering conducted a Management Walkthrough (MWT) at Banten Port on Sept. 2, followed by a visit to Panjang Port on Sept. 3. The inspections were aimed at assessing field conditions, ensuring compliance with operating procedures and identifying areas requiring follow-up.

During the visits, management reviewed operational activities and supporting facilities and issued directives to improve service quality and operational reliability.

One focus was the standardization of communication among pilot boats, tugboats and other parties involved in vessel services, particularly when handling foreign vessels. PJM said consistent communication and adherence to established procedures are important to reduce the risk of miscommunication and potential complaints from service users.

The condition and readiness of tugboats were also reviewed, including vessel cleanliness, onboard facilities and supporting equipment. PJM said maintaining equipment and facilities in proper condition is necessary to support safe and reliable operations.

Management also reviewed pilot rest facilities, emphasizing the need to maintain adequate conditions to support personnel during their service duties.

Safety inspections, including checks of mooring lines and other operational equipment, were also highlighted. PJM said periodic inspections are necessary to ensure equipment remains ready for use and operations comply with safety standards.

At Panjang Port, management identified the need for dedicated berthing facilities or locations for tugboats. PJM said such facilities would help improve tugboat positioning and support smoother operations within the port area.

At Banten Port, a damaged monitor in the planning facility was identified for immediate follow-up to ensure that operational monitoring and decision-making functions remain effective.

Management also emphasized tighter oversight of vessel fuel consumption. PJM said fuel use must be properly recorded, monitored and managed in accordance with company procedures to strengthen accountability and prevent misuse.

“Vessel fuel usage must be conducted in an orderly, transparent, compliant and accountable manner. Effective supervision is crucial to prevent misuse while safeguarding the company’s trust and reputation,” PJM’s Director of Operations and Engineering said.

PJM said findings from the Management Walkthrough would be followed by concrete corrective actions and continued coordination between management and operational teams.

The company said the initiative is also aligned with Danantara Indonesia’s transformation agenda for state-owned enterprises, which emphasizes stronger governance, operational efficiency and reliability, and sustainable value creation.

PJM said it would continue to focus on service quality, operational discipline, safety and integrity as part of efforts to support national port and logistics operations.

The Management Walkthrough is part of PJM’s broader effort to strengthen a culture of safety, integrity and operational excellence across its service operations.
